A warm prickling had crawled up and down my skin since Hanamas. I couldn’t shake it. The girl with the freckles drifted around the edges of my mind. She was dead. The thought clattered inside me, ricocheting against all the sharp, aching parts of my soul.

Even while we went through drills, it rippled over me. I finished my fiftieth push up and jumped up onto my feet. Daron could do well over two hundred without breaking his form. Not that we had spoken since the night before. I sighed.

“Something on your mind?” Telanes walked up beside me.

“I’m surprised you aren’t exhausted after yesterday.” The words sliced sharp and hot in my mouth. My hands tingled with heat.

“And what is that supposed to mean?”

“Hanamas,” I hissed.

“Did you see me there?”

“There were a lot of centaurs there.”

“I’m sure,” he said. He pulled a mug from the Ether and took a drink of water.

My stomach tightened. “Are you saying you weren’t there?”

“I was not.”

Heat rushed up my neck and across my cheeks. “Oh. I’m sorry.”

“Don’t worry yourself.”

“I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have assumed.”

“When you’re a centaur,” he said, his eyes tight, “you are used to the assumptions. I spent yesterday visiting with my mother. She is one of the more vocal dissenters on Hanamas.” His voice turned into a chuckle and his eyebrows raised as he cocked his head to the side. “Among many other things.”

“Oh,” I said, my tongue heavy and dumb. “I’m sorry again.” I ran my hands across the back of my neck. I jumped back into pushups, surprising myself with how many more I could do.
